Today you can buy factory feed for the most whimsical fish, of any volume and in a wide variety of forms. But it is often more interesting to make such food with your own hands. For guppies fish, such food will be a welcome delicacy, they will gladly eat it, especially live food, and will not spit it out. In this article, we will tell you how to feed and how to prepare food for guppies fish or any other small omnivorous aquarium fish.

Live food for guppies and omnivorous fish

Despite the fact that guppies fish are unpretentious in their diet, their diet should be varied. It is based on live food, which can be purchased at a pet store, at a poultry market, caught in a pond, or grown at home. Cyclops, daphnia, nematode micro worms, ciliates, and other microorganisms are eaten.

In the cold season, access to such food is limited, so you should learn how to artificially breed it. Experts, first of all, advise paying attention to daphnia, the “catch” of which can be obtained within 3 days. To do this, water at room temperature is poured into a glass container, taken from the aquarium or reservoir where this crustacean lives. To avoid infections, experts recommend looking for daphnia in ponds or puddles where fish are not found. To start the breeding process and maintain it, you need to add baker’s yeast or a teaspoon of vegetable juice to the jar daily. When the water is lit for at least 14 hours, you can quickly get a fresh delicacy for the guppies fish.

A rich source of pure protein is the micro worm hookworm. Guppies fish eat them with pleasure. Such live food for guppies fish is also useful because it is easy to digest. It is not that difficult to grow it. It is more difficult to find this micro worm in its natural habitat. The best time for this is warm autumn with drizzling rains, the ideal place is a layer of dead leaves in a forest or park. Especially many nematodes can be found in the “mushroom” weather at the bottom of the pile of leaves, but you can hardly see the microwaves of this species since their size is barely more than a millimeter. Put decaying leaves with nematodes in a container or bag, and at home place them in a jar where cornmeal and yeast are mixed in advance. You can also use brewed oatmeal or milk-soaked bread as a nutrient medium. At a temperature of 22-25 degrees, a microclimate is created, which leads to the active reproduction of micro worms. After a few days, the “crop” is considered ripe, and it can be harvested using, for example, a film lowered into the substrate. The nematodes will gather on it and can be fed to the guppies’ fish.

If the substrate smells like yeast, this is a good sign, then the culture is alive and you can get foods for the guppy fish. But if the formula got moldy, the nematode breeding went wrong.

Artemia is often used to feed the guppy fry. When it is diluted, a large glass bottle is used, into which water is poured at a temperature of 24 – 30 degrees, and salt is added. Artemia eggs are sprayed into the solution. A container sealed with a lid, where air circulation is established with the help of two tubes, is kept for 1-2 days. After that, ready-to-eat brine shrimp are included in the diet.

Drosophila flies will be a useful delicacy for guppy fish. To make them appear, mix fruit puree with Hercules and yeast in a three-liter jar. For the substrate, you can simply collect the apple cores and grind them in a blender. Let the mixture sit for a day or two, and you will see the first fruit flies. Then close the lid on the jar. After a week, there will be enough fruit flies for food.

Useful compound to feed guppy fish

No matter how valuable the individual components of the guppy fish menu are, you cannot do without a combined feed. Nutrient mixtures are not only a storehouse of trace elements, but also are cheap, quick to prepare, which even novice aquarists can handle, and long shelf life. Among them, two large groups can be distinguished in terms of the number of variants – exclusively of animal origin and consisting of ingredients of different origin. Compound feeds perfectly complement daily meals throughout the year, especially their presence in winter, when the range of food is narrowing.

Popular animal blends include bloodworms, daphnia, and beef liver. They must be cleaned, washed, and finely chopped in a meat grinder to a homogeneous gruel. Received in sealed glass jars is stored in the cold. As a variety, similar foods are known with the addition of pounded dried Gammarus, bread crumbs, and other ingredients.

The egg is another important dish to eat for the guppy. A raw egg is hammered into boiling water and quickly stirred with a whisk. Then the boiled egg is selected with a net and fed to the guppies fish.

When preparing combined delicacies, the use of human diet products is allowed:

  • finely chopped meat;
  • fillets of marine fish and seafood;
  • cereals soaked in boiling water (semolina, “Hercules”, etc.).

Fish derived from it – flour that you can cook yourself, and caviar are valuable ingredients in the mixture, but when choosing a type, you need to take into account the degree of usefulness. Cultivars containing anti-nutrients must be pre-cooked. Squids, mussels, oysters, and other mollusks can improve the digestion of guppies fish, so they are also actively included in feed-in boiled form or as flour.

Plant food or vegetable for guppies

Ornamental fish need fractional, at least 3-4 times a day, but frequent meals. However, guppies fish cannot be overfed, for which 1-2 days of unloading are arranged per week. At this point, the inclusion of components of plant origin will be especially effective. Cereals, green food, root crops are rich in protein and carbohydrates, which has a beneficial effect on the health and beauty of aquarium inhabitants.

Boiled and mashed peas, beans, or lentils are a welcome treat that is easy to digest. In addition, the guppies fish are shown pre-soaked meal and cake, which are rich in protein and vitamins. Among them, the most valuable are products made from sunflower and peanuts.

Guppy food also includes pre-grated porridge made from buckwheat, rice, millet, semolina. At the preliminary stage, it is enough to pour over the cereals with boiling water, and then rinse in cold water and rub through a sieve. This food cannot be considered basic, but it is quite suitable for a variety. In this case, you need to ensure that the pets do not overeat or the aquarium does not get dirty from food debris.

Green additives are another delicacy that is used both independently and as part of compound feed. These include nettle, lettuce, seaweed, parsley, spinach. Served greens vegetables pre-scalded with boiling water to destroy harmful bacteria, and finely chopped.

Vitamin balance for guppy fish

The health of the inhabitants of the aquarium is completely in your hands, therefore, when thinking over their nutrition system, be sure to pay attention to vitamins. They are actively involved in the metabolic process, and their deficiency can cause vitamin deficiency. Most of the vitamins come from food.

However, to maintain a normal vitamin balance, it is recommended to add 4-5 drops of oil solution A, E, and D to food in addition.

Dry ration for guppies fish

Experts take away a small part of dry food. However, not every store-bought wonder powder is safe for pets. It is better to prepare dry food for guppies fish with your own hands. There are many recipes that resemble the process of preparing the compound feed. However, the final product in this case has a powdery consistency, which differs it from the usual combination feed.

Here is one of the popular recipes that have proven its worth over a number of decades. Prepared live bloodworms, daphnia, as well as fish caviar, beef liver, dried seaweed, salad in equal proportions must be finely chopped, mixed, and dried in the sun or in a stove oven. The resulting mixture is ground into powder and used as an additive to the menu.

Feeding fry

In the first week, the fry should be plentiful and served 5 times daily. To do this, you should prepare nematode micro worms on oatmeal from carrot juice, a ciliate shoe, and other living microorganisms.

From 2 weeks on, food becomes 4 meals a day, it is already possible to expand the list of products. It is useful to boil a hard-boiled egg, take it from there and knead the yolk, which will become a delicacy for young animals. It is also recommended to prepare milk powder, which is formed by evaporating milk in a water bath or to gradually froth from boiled milk. Yogurt is on the list of acceptable products. It is poured over with boiling water so that the milk protein becomes jelly-like. 2-week-old fry is given some chopped algae for variety.

Upon reaching 1 month, chopped cyclops, daphnia, bloodworms are included in the food of young individuals, and from 3-5 months the guppies fish switch to an adult feeding regimen.

When setting up an aquarium with guppies fish at home, it should be remembered that pets do not eat the entire store range actively and with pleasure. Self-prepared delicacies, with proper adherence to technology, storage regime, will bring them much more benefit.
