Pugs are the oldest dog breed bred in China. They have retained their popularity to this day and is especially loved in our country by connoisseurs of decorative dogs. Many people dream of such a pet, they strive to find out everything about the habits of the animal in advance. Pugs are very loyal to their owner, they try to constantly be closer to him. A caring owner should remember that an active pet is important not only for a variety of leisure activities – walks, games – but also proper, complete, balanced nutrition. How to feed a pug is a rather serious question, it is important to know such features of the breed as sensitive digestion and a tendency to obesity.
Basic feeding rules
Although pugs, like all dogs, are omnivorous, you cannot follow the lead, indulging all the whims of your pet. It is forbidden to feed the dog with food from your own table. Food flavored with spices, spices irritates the delicate walls of the digestive organs, can lead to poisoning, death of the animal.
In the diet of pugs, it is important to follow the regimen, offering food at a strictly allotted time. The portion size is set according to the age, activity level, and health status of the dog. No matter how the dog begs for supplements, a double amount of food is contraindicated for pugs.
If uneaten food remains in the bowl, it is removed. In the place of feeding, the constant availability of clean, fresh, filtered water is mandatory.
Solid food is preferable for the pug. It is offered warm, which does not disrupt the stomach.
By observing these principles, you can keep your pet healthy for years to come.
How much and how often to feed pugs?
A smooth, shiny well-groomed coat, a well-nourished appearance, and a good mood of the pet testify to proper nutrition, a sufficient amount of food for the dog. In case of errors in the diet, lack of trace elements, vitamins, their incorrect ratio, diseases of the skin, teeth, circulatory disorders, and the work of the nervous system are possible. It is important to know that both overeating and malnutrition are dangerous for a pug.
How many times the dog is fed:
- during the period of active growth of puppies – up to two months they are fed six times;
- at 2 months and up to 4 – 5-4 times, from 4 months to six months – three to four times;
- 6 to 8 months and older — provide 3 meals;
- from 8 months to a year, the puppy is given food 2 times;
- an adult animal (over a year) is fed three times, but it is also possible twice a day, skipping lunch if opportunities do not allow.
The food allowance for a pug is calculated based on the weight, age, and physical activity of the animal.
When calculating the required daily volume of natural food, the weight of the dog is multiplied by a factor of 0.04. For example, with a dog’s body weight of 6 kg, 240 g of product is required.
Do’s and Don’ts
By providing your pet with high-quality nutritious food from an early age, you will keep your pet moving and healthy for the rest of its life.
What are pugs allowed to eat?
Proper nutrition implies the need to regale the dog with both natural and industrial (ready-made) food.
A natural option is to cook meat or fish dishes with the inclusion of vegetables and cereals. What can you feed your pug (product list):
- raw chicken, rabbit, veal, lean lamb with blood;
- by-products: liver, lungs, kidneys, tripe, chicken stomachs;
- raw non-tubular bones;
- cottage cheese, yogurt, kefir – for calcium intake;
- chopped herbs, fruits (optional);
- salted fish (sometimes added to food);
- occasionally milk (relieves heartburn);
- quail eggs or chicken egg yolk – once every seven days;
- vegetables: carrots, eggplants, zucchini, tomatoes – steamed, once a week, you can add one clove of garlic to food.
What cereals are fed to the pug: the optimal product is rice, in case of insufficient weight, wheat groats are introduced, if too full – barley.
The list of what kind of food a pug should not be fed with:
- raw river fish (infected with helminths, contains many small bones);
- pork (pigs are disease vectors);
- liver (causes indigestion);
- sugar, confectionery, sweet products;
- potatoes – contributes to the development of diabetes mellitus;
- bread, other bakery products;
- salting, smoked meats;
- semi-finished products;
- mayonnaise, sour cream, cream;
- noodles and pasta are excluded from the dog’s menu.
Choosing a natural feeding option for your pet, you will not be able to accurately determine the required norm of vitamins and minerals, their replaceability. The diet will not be completely balanced. It is better to dwell on high-quality ready-made food, where everything is designed by experts for your pug, and there is no risk of feeding your pet useless, harmful food.
Features of feeding dry and ready-made feed
Feeding a pug with industrial products requires less time, and the ratio of vitamins to proteins, fats, carbohydrates is balanced here. But here, too, difficulties may arise, because a lot of dry and wet feed is produced, which differ in energy value, composition, minerals, and vitamins contained.
Many manufacturers of ready-made dry and wet food have developed product lines that take into account, the age and activity of the dog breed. They did not pass by the cosmetic and treatment-and-prophylactic orientation. By observing all the recommendations of the manufacturers, the owner will avoid digestive upsets in the dog.
What dry food is better for feeding pugs? When choosing a certain brand of product, heed the advice of breeders and veterinarians: buy feeds of at least premium class. The first in the ranking of recognized brands are: Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Pedigree-Pall, but grainless Akana, Hills, Grange, and Grandorf Natural Holistic are considered the best. They are made with minimal heat treatment, a small number of dyes and preservatives. They are distinguished by high nutritional value and biological activity. Suitable for dogs of any age. It is believed that the natural ingredients included in holistic are even suitable for human nutrition.
When changing a brand, a new product is introduced carefully, gradually replacing the usual food with it.
There are many opinions on which dry food is best for a pug, both positive and negative. We hope that the reviews of veterinarians will help you avoid mistakes when choosing.
Kruglov Oleg Vladimirovich, veterinarian . Pedigree’s products are affordable, but they are cautiously offered to pugs prone to digestive upsets. Wet food is low in fat and protein, vitamin and mineral components. The meat content is negligible. Drying contains meat flour, which indicates a low level of production technology. Corn and rice are the main components of the feed.
Leskov Sergey Pavlovich, veterinarian . Compared to other super-premium class feed formulations, Royal Canin is inferior. It is much worse in composition, but its cost is not much cheaper. A low percentage of fiber and wheat content provokes digestive disorders, allergic reactions in decorative dogs, for example, pugs, which are often prone to these manifestations. The high price of these feeds is due only to the company’s marketing strategy.
Popova Natalya Vladimirovna, veterinarian . Hills feed manufacturer has been in the food market for a long time, which gives the right to trust this brand. The composition of the feed contains corn and wheat, flour from natural meat, trace elements, vitamins. Suitable for all dogs with no sensitivity to these cereals. The line of feed also includes therapeutic and prophylactic products, shown in the treatment of obesity, diseases of the cardiovascular and genitourinary systems.
Olga Petrova, veterinarian. Akana’s food is rightfully considered one of the best: it contains a lot of fruits, berries, vegetables, and top-quality meat. There are no freeze-dried products. There are no carbohydrates, but a lot of proteins. For pugs who tend to be overweight, this is an important indicator.
Zakharchenko Valery Vladimirovich, veterinarian. The products of the American company Artemis deserve attention due to the absence of cereals in it, which are sometimes difficult for the sensitive stomachs of decorative dogs, such as Yorkshire terriers and pugs, and the presence of useful herbs, green tea, seaweed, berries, vegetables. The meat here is only 20%, but the manufacturer assures that this is enough for the development of the dog
Unfortunately, pugs are a breed with an unstable digestive system. They are prone to allergies, obesity, so you have to try more than one brand of products in search of the best option for your dog. To determine which food is better, you need to buy a little of the finished product, regardless of the manufacturer and brand, to observe how the animal and its body will react to the innovation.
Soak or not
Feeding adult dogs with drying soaked in water at room temperature shows itself well. It is better for puppies to fill the granules with milk, kefir, or yogurt. If a dog has problems with the oral cavity, it is difficult for him to refuse his favorite food, or there are recommendations from a veterinarian due to an individual diagnosis, such a diet is required.
But if the animal eats with appetite, drinks enough water, it does not have a reaction from the gastrointestinal tract, signs of dental disease, gums, it is not necessary to soak dry granules. Wet food is not recommended for pugs, it is allowed to eat special canned meat mixtures with the addition of chopped biscuits. It contains a sufficient amount of minerals and nutrients.
Natural food on the pug menu
Natural feeding is based on the preparation of meat porridge, two-thirds of which consists of meat. One-third are vegetables and cereals. 1% comes from vegetable oil and vitamin supplements. Puppies need at least 50% of meat products.
Food is served freshly prepared, warm. After 20 minutes, the bowl of uneaten food is removed. Leftover food is thrown away.
It is imperative to include fermented milk products and plant foods in the pug’s menu: rice, oatmeal, buckwheat.
Lean beef is preferred from meat. It is better if it is added in the form of minced meat to boiled porridge along with steamed vegetables and fresh herbs.
Natural is well absorbed by pugs. It is hypoallergenic and will satisfy various tastes of pets due to its variety. Calorie content can be adjusted depending on the season, the health of the dog. The disadvantages of the natural method are the need for the additional introduction of vitamin and mineral supplements and daily cooking.

Feeding the puppies
At an early age, the puppy should receive the most complete nutrition – the health of the dog in the future depends on this. In the first three months, small pets are fed 5 times a day. The main food is calcium-containing products: low-fat yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese. To improve the taste of pugs, honey is added. Boiled porridge is allowed. At lunchtime, fruits and dried fruits, quail yolk, stewed vegetables are given. In the afternoon and evening, the diet is based on meat. You can offer the puppy pre-soaked in milk and broken bones.
You can take porridge as the basis for the nutrition of a baby up to seven months old. During this period, the content of meat and dairy products increases. Food is offered three to four times a day.
Between seven and eight months, the baby is fed three times. The feed volume increases. Dairy products are given in the morning feeding, meat, and fish products – at lunchtime and in the evening.
Starting from eight months, the puppy is able to eat the same food and in the same amount as an adult dog. With natural feeding, mineral and vitamin supplements are introduced into the dog’s diet. The veterinarian will tell you which ones the animal needs. Transferring the baby from natural food to ready-made food at home, they do it gradually, gradually eliminating the pug from natural food.
If the pet does not eat
There are situations when your pug eats poorly or refuses to eat at all, although he previously ate everything and begged for supplements. Why doesn’t the pet eat? The reasons for refusal can be the following:
- stressful situations (the dog may refuse food if it is scared, nervous, or jealous when it changes its place of residence when it is separated from its owner if one of its family members dies);
- old age;
- the owner’s aggression (if the owner showed anger during feeding, the dog’s food can now be associated with negativity);
- mismatch of food to the preferences of the dog, change in the type of preparation, proportions of food;
- hormonal changes (during pregnancy due to toxicosis, sexual heat – often significantly decreased appetite in bitches, and in males – due to the close presence of a female in heat);
- the constant presence of a bowl of food (a pug can get fat or, fed up with the same food, having an excellent sense of smell by a dog’s nature, will become picky and beg for food from the table);
- fasting days, sometimes arranged by dogs, while the animals behave in their usual way.
But if you notice that your pug has changed outwardly, has become lethargic, breathing heavily, trying to retire, he often vomits, he has lost his appetite or does not eat at all, what to do in this case? This behavior can be life-threatening and a symptom of serious illness or injury. In such situations, it is necessary to immediately contact the veterinary clinic, where, if necessary, all the necessary diagnostic tests will be performed and the appropriate treatment prescribed.
Be considerate of your pet. Whichever type of food you choose for your pug, remember that saving on food means providing your little four-legged friend with low-quality food. There will be no biological value from such feeding. And the emergence of chronic diseases will not belong in coming. Take care of your pet by offering him the best possible, and then you can enjoy communication with a funny, active and healthy baby all his life.
